Why Bihar needs your help:-
Bihar is, socio-economically, one of the poorest states in India, it with some of the lowest life expectancy and highest rates of infant mortality in India. Koilakh is a village of over 8,000 people (2001 Indian Census) in Northern Bihar. The trusts work is currently based in the village of Koilakh, district Madhubani, Bihar, India. It is approximately 30 kilometers from the Nepalese border and over a 6 hour drive from the state capital, Patna. The nearest Hospital is a forty five minute drive away in the District Capital of Madhubani (pop. 66,340). The Indian Census (2001) states that in the entirety of Madhubani district with its population of 3.5 million people across 1,034 villages have a paltry 232 medical facilities, 48 Primary Health Centers and 157 Primary Health Sub-Centers. Each medical facility therefore caters for the needs of 15,410 people. In short medical access in Bihar is, for most of the population, unavailable and with over three quarters of the population of Madhubani district not in employment. It is within this overburdened and under resourced sector that the MTC Trust has decided to begin our work.
JKM Hospital - The Trust took a serious view of this situation and decided to set up a hospital called Janki Kapileshwar Memorial Hospital (JKMH). The Hospital is approximately 8,000 squared feet and from June 2003 started operating with a single doctor and few paramedics. It has its own generator as the power supply to the village is intermittent at best, sometimes days will go by without power. Now it has 4 experienced doctors, 6 paramedic staff with 2 male and 2 female attendants. Recently the Hospital has set up a dental clinic. The hospital runs its own pharmacy with needs based and life saving drugs. The Pharmacy operates at a small profit in order to maintain itself and expand the stock of drugs available.
The Doctor's team is made up with one senior surgeon, one senior physician and one resident medical officer. Right now, mostly out patients are treated. Up until Oct 2007, approximately 6,000 patients with differing conditions have been treated at an affordable consultation fee of Rs 20/- for general and Rs.30/- by visiting specialists valid for 3 weeks.
The Hospital is funded exclusively on charitable basis; to date it has gratefully been funded by family and friends.
As regards the percentage spent on human relief and hospital .I can only say right now that all the income is being spent on in providing the care and comfort for the patients and building the infra structure. In the future on any donation received the percentage of the income to be spent on human relief or whatever the purpose is the donation for, will be not less than 90% of the income and 10% on the operating cost. That all care will be taken to keep the operating cost minimum possible to give the maximum benefit to the beneficiaries
My wife who has been supporting throughout to this worthy cause has also decided to give some time to take care of gynecological patients.
